A Physiotherapists job involves helping to recover and / or rehabilitate from a state of having been incapacitated. He/she has the responsibility to help restore the patient’s body to its optimal functioning level.

Tasks Involved are: Prescribe remedial exercises Muscle strength evaluation and quantification. Physical treatment by electrotherapy modalities like short-wave diathermy, microwave diathermy, ultrasonic therapy, contrast bath, cryo-therapy, hydro collator, whirlpool therapy, trans-electric muscle stimulation, infra-red therapy, ultraviolet therapy and different therapeutic exercises by automated machines. Evaluate sitting, standing balance in neurologically affected patients. Apply manual therapy, mobilization, manipulation of soft tissue techniques etc. Progress through wheelchair and gait training with or without ambulatory aids. Research in relevant areas. Aid in-home evaluation to make the environment barrier free and accessible. Improving the status of patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Physiotherapists treat the reactions and responses of the body to injury, disease or abnormalities in development. They are also key health professionals in the prevention of injury.

Physiotherapy means Physiotherapeutic system of medicine which includes examination, diagnosis, treatment, advice and instruction to any person in connection with the movement dysfunction, bodily malfunction, physical disorder, disability, healing and pain from trauma and disease–physical and mental conditions–using physical agents including exercise, mobilization, manipulation, mechanical and electrotherapy devices.

A Physiotherapist is a very important member of the health care team where his responsibility is to rehabilitate the patient back to normal without medicines only by exercise, manual therapy, rehabilitation techniques and physical activity.

The normal pay Package for a Physiotherapist working in a hospital, i.e., in a physiotherapy department starts with minimum Rs. 3-4 lakhs per annum. As experience increases, remuneration increases depending on the work output and the type of organization he / she is working in.

After completing 4 years of BPT, six months of compulsory internship is done in a multi-specialty hospital (minimum 250 bedded) with rotating duties in different specialties of the hospital like medicine, surgery, orthopedics, cardiac, neurology & Pediatrics etc.

In BPT degree, the students will be required to study basic medical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-chemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Orthopedics, Surgery, Neurology, Cardiothoracic Diseases and Surgery, Psychology & Sociology and then core physiotherapy subjects such as Exercise therapy, Electrotherapy, Manual therapy, Biomechanics Prosthetics Orthotics, Obstetrics Gynecology, Orthopedic Physiotherapy, Neuro-Physiotherapy, Sports Physiotherapy, Cardiothoracic & Cardiothoracic Surgery -Physiotherapy, Community Based Rehabilitation , General Physiotherapy, Research Methodology Biostatistics, Organization and Administration and Research project to develop an insight into the management and treatment of conditions.

After passing BPT, a student can pursue MPT in different specialized branches like – Orthopedics, Neurology, Sports Medicine, Cardiopulmonary, Pediatric & Gynecology to enhance interest areas and skills. After Masters, student can also pursue their Ph.D in the field of physiotherapy.

Further, they are also eligible for the programs like hospital administration, business management, public health management etc.

A Physiotherapist can do research to develop new techniques, devices and design protocols of rehabilitation for various health disorders. As physiotherapy is an upcoming field, stronger roots of profession can develop only if evidence based practice is incorporated in clinical practice.

BPT program was started in 2004 in MREI and this year shall be 13th year. The course is taught by highly qualified faculties including medical doctors, surgeons, physiotherapists, scientists with all salient features of MRIIRS campus.

The institute has tie-ups with 15 renowned hospitals of Delhi-NCR for clinical training and internship placements like Batra Hospital, VIMHANS, IBS, Asian hospital, Fortis, National Heart Institute, Metro Hospital, Sarvodaya Hospital, Sitaram Bhartiya Hospital ESI Hospitals, QRG Hospitals, and Asian Hospital etc. The institute has foreign faculty exchange programme with Physiotherapy Academy YAB Yogyakarta & Cahaya Padma Kumara Foundation Indonesia etc. The department keeps organizing regular workshops in Therapeutics and physiotherapy areas for updating knowledge of staffs and students. The department has state-of-the-art OPD facilities with a good patient load. The department focuses on evidence based practice which is carried out in well equipped labs designed for research purposes. The department focuses on complete holistic development of the students as Personality Development Programs and Inter disciplinary learning is incorporated into the curriculum. The Department is keen on providing international exposure to its students in the form of international conferences. Normally, a Physiotherapist working in a hospital-physiotherapy department starts with a minimum Rs. 4-5 lakhs per annum and generally has sharing income from out-patient department and from patients seen in In-patient department. Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is a specialty of physiotherapy science which plays a significant role in therapeutic management of orthopedic disorders, dysfunctions, trauma, surgery, joint replacement surgery, rheumatologic and degenerative disorders, amputees, handicapped, geriatric care etc. by manual therapy procedures and therapeutic exercises.

Sports Physiotherapy is a specialty of physiotherapy science that plays a major role in multidisciplinary approach in prevention, therapeutic management of musculoskeletal sports injuries. Scientific approaches of sports training, physiological conditioning, bio-mechanical and kinesiological analysis, fitness testing, sports psychology, doping, anthropometry, sports nutrition, assessment and management of injured athletes are dealt comprehensively.

Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialized physiotherapy science which plays a major role in comprehensive therapeutic management of degenerative diseases, demyelinating diseases, balance disorders, head injury, disorders of cerebral circulation, spinal injuries and fractures, pain, neuropsychological problems, developmental disorders, movement disorders, disorders of muscle tone, critical illness, neuro-surgical conditions, geriatric rehabilitation etc. with the use of various neuro-rehabilitation procedures.

Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy is a specialized physiotherapy science wherein comprehensive rehabilitation is done after cardiothoracic surgery, for respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, intensive care in respiratory and cardiac conditions, vascular surgery, pediatrics neonatal respiratory intensive care and many other conditions.

Depending on the specialty chosen and basic knowledge from undergraduate level, the students are taught a blend of subjects which help to build better in depth understanding of their specialization. Emphasis on research and biostatistics, interdisciplinary learning, pedagogy and ethics and law is given. Physiotherapeutic skills in both basic and advanced level i.e., manual therapy and rehabilitation approaches are part of the curriculum.

After passing MPT a student can pursue PhD, fellowships program and certified courses in different specialized branches to enhance their academic interest.

Clinical research is a new upcoming area in medical sciences and it is widely developing in India as seen in Western countries. Physiotherapists in India are now switching over to Evidence Based Practice which is only possible by conducting researches. As this is a growing field in medical arena, research has great scope in physiotherapy, as with more research work better techniques and skills can be developed for rehabilitation of the patients.

Physiotherapy is a very promising, rewarding and satisfactory profession abroad, and, as paramedical science, has a larger role and responsibility in a hospital and clinic setup. After clearing the licensing examination of the given country, it opens up wide opportunities for the physiotherapists.
