About the Department
The Department of Physics offers 3-year B.Sc. (Honours) programme, 2-year M.Sc. programme and Ph.D. degree programmes in Physics. In addition to core courses in Physics to ensure strong fundamentals, open-elective courses from other departments and specialized skill-based courses are provided for a wider knowledge base. A compulsory laboratory component with well-designed experiments is in place to complement the knowledge acquired in classrooms. The syllabus is revised and updated from time to time for strengthening the UG/PG programs. Emphasis is made on continuous evaluation of the students to ensure satisfactory progress of the students. We thus believe in student-centric approach to promote holistic development of the students. Various fellowship schemes like Uttkarsh, Uttam and girl child fellowship are offered to support and encourage meritorious students.
The Department has a vibrant research environment with full-time 10 faculty members involved in theoretical, computational and experimental research. This includes areas of condensed matter physics, photonics, plasma physics, and atmospheric physics among others. We have active research collaboration with scientists/faculties at international facilities at POSTECH, PAL, Pohang, UNIST, Ulsan, Korea, and KIST Seoul, Korea. In addition, we have national collaborators at IUAC, NPL and IIT, New Delhi. A centralized University Instrumentation Centre (UIC) is also established at the MRU campus, that houses advanced instrumentation facilities to cater to the needs of Applied Sciences and Engineering departments. At present, the centre offers facilities like UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), RF and DC magnetron sputtering unit, solar simulator with Keithley electrometer, high temperature muffle furnace (1400 ºC), spin coater, pelletizer and nanoparticle synthesis facility. The department also houses 12 core small computer cluster for mpich, mpic job submission.
Active exposure of the students to diverse research areas is encouraged by organizing workshops, conferences and invited lectures from eminent researchers from time to time, in order to enhance their inquisitiveness in Science. Further, the students are encouraged for taking up research projects/internships at National R&D labs, as part of the curriculum in both UG and PG programs. In addition, sseveral value-added courses, certification courses in soft skills and foreign languages are offered for holistic development of the students.
As part of enhancing the student-teacher relationship, different faculties of the Department engage in providing mentorship to the students in terms of curriculum assistance, ethical values and career counseling. Placement assistance is further provided to students through two dedicated cells of the University, namely the Career Development Center (CDC) and Corporate Resource Centre (CRC).
