Civil Engineering is an ever-changing industry. With contemporary technological advancements, the civil engineering field has evolved from working solely with concrete to now designing and building everything from bridges to buildings. Using drones for surveying land, designing and monitoring construction of structures using cloud based softwares, nondestructive testing, enabling remote sensing via cloud technologies, connecting devices in cities- Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled sensors, use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) & big data, development of water conservation technology and develop 3D printing solutions, has shifted Civil Engineers to more advanced phase of development. After completion of Degree, one can go for various job opportunities in public/private sector, research, academics and own consultancy/contracting firms. With the emphasis on development of infrastructure, there is a bright future ahead for Civil Engineers for the coming decades.
The curriculum for B. Tech Civil Engineering has been benchmarked against the Model Curriculum by AICTE with training and education aligned to roll out highly-aware, sustainability-minded generation to join the workforce globally. There are ample opportunities available to students to opt both for discipline electives and cross discipline electives/MOOCs floated at the University level in line with the Choice Based Credit System. Our syllabus is regularly reviewed and modified according to the feedback from stakeholders and needs of industry by the Board of Studies and subsequently approved by the Academic Council.
The Department has fully equipped Labs with state-of-the-art equipment, like horizontal and vertical shake table, Universal Testing Machine with 1000 kN capacity, Non Destructive Testing equipments, Structures Lab, Strength of Materials Lab, Soil Mechanics Lab, Environmental Engineering Lab, Concrete Lab, Transportation Engineering Lab, Hydraulics Lab, Fluid Machinery Lab, Surveying Lab, Engineering Geology Lab, Computational Lab, Advanced Structural Engineering Lab and Construction Yard are available in the college premises for regular lab courses, research and consultancy. Summer Internship- I II, III and IV have been kept before 3rd, 5th and 7th semesters and during 8th semester for the students to understand Industry requirements, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry. Contemporary software trainings like AutoCAD, Revit, ETABs, STAAD, Building Information Modeling, OpenRoads, QGIS, MS Projects and Primavera are part of our curriculum. In order to keep the students a breast with the technological advances, continuous interaction with reputed companies is being organized at frequent intervals in the form of special technical lectures/ workshops/ site visits or exchange of technical knowledge etc.
Yes, Department has an articulation agreement with Auckland University of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand (AUT) to facilitate the progression which includes transfer of credits for a student who has completed an approved qualification or paper offered by MRIIRS to an approved qualification in AUT: Bachelor Engineering Honours, Construction Engineering at Auckland University of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand (AUT).
Smart buildings, zero energy buildings, smart water systems, and smart electricity grids, waste management protocols, will all be part of the future connected cities, in addition to mobility solutions. As a result, engineering education must broaden to encompass infrastructure, environmental knowledge, technology, sensors, and data science. The Manav Rachna Smart Infrastructure focus provides one with just that, guiding one through a customized curriculum, hands-on training, and interactive industrial experiences outside of the classroom.
Inclusion of the green building norms has to be integrated with contemporary approaches and Environmental protection has to be at the forefront of all infrastructure design and operation. Reuse and recycling of waste, water reuse and recycling and many other facets of Civil engineering require integrated planning and design in a transition from contemporary practices to state-of-the-art green and clean constructions. Meticulous planning, creativity, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help in achieving these objectives. B.Tech (Hons.) Civil Engineering with specialization in Green Technology & Sustainability Engg. offered by the department from 2021 will be catering to the above aspects.
India is going through an intense phase of rapid infrastructure development. The duty of a Civil Engineer involves planning, designing, executing, operating and maintaining various constructions like airport, dock harbor, dams, tunnels, buildings, roads, railways, bullet train project, rapid metro project, monorail project, metro rail projects, flood control structures, river training works, water wastewater treatment plants, solid waste management, canal, transmission towers, slope protection, ground improvement etc. This throws up possibilities of absorption of Civil Engineers in a big way. Presently, a huge demand and supply gap exists for Civil Engineers in the market.
In the public sector, the Civil Engineering graduates can get absorbed in PSUs like DDA, BPCL, DMRC, NCCBM, HPCL, IOCL, DRDO, ISRO, NBCC, NHAI, IRCON, RITES to name a few. The graduates can also appear in the prestigious Indian Engineering Services (IES) examination where they get to serve in the Central Govt. Organizations like BRO, CPWD, MES, CWC, Survey of India and Indian Railways etc. There are also vacancies in the Technical Entry for the Armed Forces for Civil Engineers; the highest for any single branch of engineering. The Officer entry will suffice with any branch of engineering.
At MRIIRS, a good number of students have been placed in reputed companies such as RITES, DMRC, Irrigation Deptt, DDA, NCRTC, AECOM, CB&I, COWI India, Ashoka Buildcon, Rothenberger, PNB Housing Finance, Earth Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, GR Infra Projects Ltd, KMC Construction, PNC Infratech Ltd, Sushee Infra Pvt Ltd, TCS, Theme Engineering, Unihorn, Vishwa Infrastructure, SGS-Technomech, Top Surveying, Prathishta Group, Cinda Engineering, Supertech, RDC Concrete, Vegazva Group etc. Graduates from MRIIRS have also joined the Corps of Engineers in Indian Army. Besides, the department looks forward to tying up with other companies for opening up other windows of opportunities for recruitment of students.
Impetus on innovation and research starts from 3rd semester onwards to 4th and 5th semester through courses “Design, Thinking and Innovation-I, II and III”. The students are required to identify societal, regional issues, conduct literature survey, devise methodologies for solutions and ultimately publish research papers and thus, add to the knowledge of existing literature in varying fields. The project work starts from 6th Semester as Phase I and then in 7th Semester for implementation of recognized contemporary civil engineering problems. The research publications, project work and industrial experience greatly enhance the skills, entrepreneurship, employability and problem-solving skills with lifelong lesson enrichment after due deliberations.
After graduation, one can pursue M.Tech in various sub-disciplines of Civil Engineering like Structures, Geotechnical, Environment, Transportation, Water Resources, Construction Management etc. Option of doing MBA is also available in disciplines like Real Estate Management, Construction Management, Construction Economics, Quantity Surveying, etc. GATE/GRE/GMAT score has to be obtained for admission in universities of national and international repute.
At MRIIRS, one can pursue M.Tech in Civil Engineering with specialization in Structural Engineering/Transportation Engineering/Construction Management. Nine batches of M.Tech have already passed out and students are placed in very good companies of International recognition.
