The Department of Mathematics, MRU organized a Workshop on Vedic Ganit: Facts & Mission on March 28th, 2022 on the occasion of MREI 25 Year – Silver Jubilee Celebration. Prof. Vishwanath Unkalkar was the Guest speaker. Prof. Unkalkar is a veteran in Vedic Maths with about 25 years of teaching experience in Vedic Maths and has been connected with Vidya Bharati, Karnataka & Shiksha SanskrutiUththanNyasa(SSUN), New Delhi since 15-20 years. He has Written 10 books on Vedic mathematics in English (6), Marathi(3) & Kannada (1).  Also, a set of 2 DVD’s of about 12 hours of his lectures on vedic mathematics having 10 arithmetic and algebraic operations was released recently. He has conducted over Six hundred workshops & innumerable introductory lectures on Vedic mathematics and Vedic Maths quiz competition from district level to national level for Vidya Bharati.

The workshop was inaugurated in the benign presence of  Prof. Vishwanath Unkalkar, Guest Speaker, Prof.(Dr.) Y.K. Sharma, Head, Department of Mathematics;  Dr. Deepa Arora, Organiser of the Workshop & Associate Prof., Department of Mathematics; Dr. Aparna Vyas, Organiser of the Workshop & Associate Prof. Department of Mathematics and All the faculty members of the Mathematics Department. Dr. Deepa Arora delivered the welcome address and briefed about the objective & outcome expected of the workshop. She enumerated the importance of vedic mathematics as the skillset that shall help to solve mathematical problems faster and with greater accuracy and hence provides an edge in regular curriculum & competitive examinations. Also how vedic math cultivates an interest for numbers and eliminates the phobia of math present in most of the students.

Prof. Vishwanath Unkalkar began the session with the explanation of the origin of the vedic mathematics from vedas and charted the work of some famous mathematical acharyas. Participants were introduced to the basic terminology used for mathematical operations in Sanskrit. Prof. Unkalkar covered five different modules in the workshop, namely, addition, multiplication, squares, square roots & Pythagoras Theorem. He explained the basic formulae(Sutra) of each module and then slowly & steadily weaved the methodology of performing basic to complex  mathematical calculations using the sutras. The participants were overwhelmed with the magic of sutras and their easy implementation to achieve accurate results in the calculations. Participants too  tried the newly learnt skills on varied problems and were satisfied to learn. They also enjoyed how Prof. Unkalkar ji defeated the calculator by performing faster & accurate calculations than it.

The workshop was a successful event with around 40 participants. The participants had a great learning experience as per their feedback.

At the end, the workshop was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Deepa Arora, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, MRU.
