Workshop On Scientific Writing and Reference management using Mendeley

Scientific writing is an essential component of research. In recent years, the pace of communicating research, in terms of journal articles, books, thesis, and conference papers, has increased exponentially with rapid advancements. To know about the essential features, advantages, and limitations of popular referencing tools that would be beneficial for students and scholars in their research endeavor and academic development has become is need of the hour.

Updating knowledge about newer modalities to manage references has become an essential requirement for scientific writing.

A workshop titled ‘Scientific Writing and Reference Management using Mendeley’ was organized by the Department of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies on October 10, 2020. The workshop was conducted on the MS-Teams platform. The Eminent speaker of the event was Dr. Kapil Kumar Goyal (Ph.D. from IIT), Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering at Dr. B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar.

Dr. Arti Saxena, Moderator of the event welcomed all the esteemed dignitaries, expert speaker and participants. An enriched formal introduction about the expert was delivered by Dr. Pooja Khurana. The guest speaker Dr. Kapil Kumar Goyal started his talk by expressing the need for writing a scientific article in an effective manner, a skill that should be acquired by every scholar, researcher, and academicians in order to get their work noticed. He further explained the do’s and don’ts while writing a scientific paper, the renowned publication houses, the correct procedure of performing a literature search, the websites where one can search accurate papers related to their field of interest, the websites to explore various journal parameters like impact factor, indexing etc. and how to execute an advance search on Google scholar.

The second phase of the lecture included the introduction to a wonderful tool called “Mendeley” where he beautifully explained the applications of the tool in maintaining and organizing downloaded articles, the powerful feature of searching in a pdf file. He also gave a brief on how to change the style of an article according to the journal format using plug-in install.

While heading towards the end of the workshop participants actively asked questions related to the topic to clear their doubts and expand their spectrum of knowledge.

A feedback form was also shared with the participants to know their perspective regarding the conduct of the event.

At the end, a vote of thanks was presented to the guest and the participants by Dr. Jyoti Chawla, Head of Department Applied Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Technology. She thanked all the resource persons for their valuable contribution towards the great success of the webinar and appreciated the efforts of faculty members of the department. She also acknowledged the all kind support of senior functionaries of MRIIRS.

The webinar turned out to be a quite knowledgeable session as it provided the required insight of the topic to participants. The efforts of the guest speaker and coordination team of the department of Applied Sciences were appreciated by the participants.
