Expert Lecture and Workshop on Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry

Fear and anxiety can be major hurdles in pediatric dental treatment, making patient management a challenge. To address this, Manav Rachna Dental College and Hospital hosted a one-day workshop on Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry on December 20th, 2023.

The workshop, organized by the Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, aimed to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills to utilize nitrous oxide effectively in their practices. This technique has the potential to transform the way we approach pediatric dentistry, creating a more positive and comfortable experience for both children and dentists.

Over 65 participants including faculty, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students from Manav Rachna Dental College and Sudha Rustagi Dental College attended the workshop. Renowned experts Dr. Kunal Gupta and Dr. Radhika Chopra graced the workshop as resource faculty.

Dr. Gupta, a pioneer in the field, shared his extensive experience and insights, while Dr. Chopra, an expert in practical implementation, provided valuable guidance on incorporating nitrous oxide into dentists’ daily practice.

The workshop included:

  • Expert lectures – Dr. Gupta and Dr. Chopra delivered comprehensive lectures on the principles, indications, and practical management of nitrous oxide inhalation sedation in pediatric dentistry.
  • Interactive sessions – Participants actively engaged in Q&A sessions and discussions, clearing doubts and gaining a deeper understanding of the technique.
  • Live demonstrations – The day culminated in hands-on sessions where participants familiarized themselves with the nitrous oxide apparatus, observed live patient management, and gained practical insights through guided practice.

Dr. Avantika Tuli, Professor & Head of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, emphasized the importance of nitrous oxide as a tool for creating a more positive dental experience for children.

She expressed her hope that the workshop would equip participants with the skills and confidence to utilize this technique effectively in their own practices.

Dr. Kunal Gupta further emphasized the impact of nitrous oxide inhalation sedation, stating, “It is a game-changer in pediatric dentistry. It not only alleviates anxiety in young patients but also facilitates a smoother workflow for dentists. This technique, when used judiciously, can truly transform the overall dental experience for children.”

The workshop successfully bridged knowledge gaps and empowered dental professionals to implement this technique effectively, ultimately contributing to enhanced patient care.

Dr. Radhika Chopra reiterated this perspective, stating, “The key is in the careful and informed application of nitrous oxide. Understanding its nuances and integrating it seamlessly into practice can make a significant difference. It’s not just about the science; it’s about creating a compassionate and supportive environment for both the child and the dental professional.”

Dr. Avantika Tuli concluded by inviting colleagues to embrace this innovative approach as, “Not just as a skill enhancement but as a means to revolutionize the way we care for our young patients. Together, we can create a positive impact on pediatric dental healthcare.” As the field of pediatric dentistry evolves, initiatives like these play a crucial role in equipping practitioners with the tools and knowledge needed to provide the highest standard of care.
