World Intellectual Property Day Celebration

IPR Cell, under the banner of Manav Rachna Innovation and Incubation Centre (MRIIC) celebrated the World Intellectual Property Day on 26th April 2018. The Cell invited two women from different backgrounds who have achieved excellence in their areas of work. The invited women achievers were Dr. Subhra Chakraborty (Staff Scientist VII, National Institute of Plant Genome Research) and Ms. Chhaya Bhanti (Founder of Vertiver and Co-Founder of IORA Ecological Solutions).

The program started with an introduction of the event by head of the IPR Cell Dr. Patrali Banerjee, which was followed by a small video on the dynamic female inventor Hedy Lamar. Pro Vice Chancellor, MRIIRS and Executive Director, MRIIC, Dr. M. K. Soni highlighted the involvement of women in research and responsibility of the society to give her the due credit. Dr. Pradeep K. Varshney, Director MRIIC, spoke about the importance of IPR protection, and shared how at Manav Rachna women scientists are setting new trends.

Dr. Subhra Chakraborty explained how the patent system works. Being a perfect example of an empowered woman, she explained how to do effective patenting and publishing, both in the academic scenario. She encouraged the students to both publish and patent their work/invention. Ms. Chhaya Bhanti explained the amalgamation of science and technology with the present environmental issues and challenges. She urged the young students to not just be consumers of information, but to challenge the status quo, ask questions about the information and find solutions.

The talks were followed by an award ceremony where the inventors who have worked collaboratively with the IPR Cell to file complete patent applications were recognized. There was also a small game show for the students on trademarks. The event ended with the results and awards for the “Innovative Idea Contest”, held for students of Manav Rachna in the field of Women Empowerment.
