Department of Chemistry organized One Day International Workshop on “Advancement of Chemistry in Building Materials” in Association with National Council for Cement and Building Materials, Faridabad and Technische Universität Dresden, Germanyon 03rd March 2022
The department has conducted an One Day International Workshop on Advancement of Chemistry in Building Materials which comprises of three session by three different speakers, two speakers are from National Council for Cement and Building Materials and third Speaker from Institute of Construction materials, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. About 115 participants have registered for the Workshop comprising UG/PG students, research Scholars, Faculty members of MRU and other educational institutionsnamely AggarwalCollege, Ballabgarh, Chandigargh University, CMR Institute of Technology, Dayalbagh Educational Institute, NIT Meghalaya, etc. Also the workshop comprises of participants from industry JK cements and NCCBM.
Dr. Vinayak Vandhan Pathak had given introduction about the workshop and welcomed the participants. Prof. Megha Bansal, Professor and head of the Department gave a brief introduction about the Speaker for the first session Dr. B.N. Mohapatra, Director general of National Council for Cement and Building Materials.Dr. B.N. Mohapatrawas enriched with 10 years of Research and over 22 years of industry experience with very strong academic relations with Premier Institutes,he has published more than 120 technical papers in various National and International Journals/proceedingsand completed many international projects. Dr. B.N. Mohapatradelivered his lecture on Sustainable Development in Indian Cement Industry before which he has telecasted a video of the NCCBM and its projects for 2 minutes. He spoke upon sustainable initiatives with challenges, developments and probable areas of scope. He extended his lecture on Phospho-gypsum materials and its applications in cement industry, also he highlighted about cement chemistry with significance of clinker minerals used in cement industry. The session was concluded with few question from the participants and the speaker encouraged the research students and scholars to have an collaborative research with NCCBM.
In second session Dr. Vinayak Vanthan Pathak gave a brief introduction about Dr. S.K. Chaturvedi, joint director in cement research and independent testing of NCCBM, BallabgarhWho has over 32 years of experience in the Field of Cement and Building Materials, nano cement/ceramics, reactivity of raw materials. Dr. S.K. Chaturvedi delivered his lecture on “Role of Cement Chemistry in Decarbonization of Cement Industry”, where he highlighted the presentation towards environmental aspects and various process of decarbonization. He extended his talk by discussing elaborately on parameters on raw material quality, how they will be analyzed in the laboratories and also discussed about some standards. The talk has more insights about chemistry aspect of construction materials and the thirst areas where further sustainable developments are needed. The session was concluded with few question to the speaker and given a break of 10 mins to the participants.
In third session of the workshop, Dr. Arpit SandAssociate Professor in Chemistry, introduced the speaker Dr. Christof Schrofl, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Institute of Construction materials, Dresden, Germany. Dr. Christof Schrofl has published more than 50 research articles in is credit with more than 2000 citations. He is expertise in Material Characterization, Surface Modification, Microstructure, Polymers, Rheology, Concrete, Nanocomposites, NanotechnologyMaterial Characteristics and Surface Chemistry. He delivered his lecture on “Super absorbent polymers”how it was useful in developing new construction materials. The lecture was based on his research finding and he discussed on structure/ effect relationship in Portland cement mortar and link to their sorption kinetics within fresh cement pastes. The session was concluded with few question from the participants, after whichDr. A. Jayamani summarized the highlight of three sessions of the workshop and concluded the workshop with a note of thanks and photo session.
