Ms. Chhavi Baliyan, alumna B.Sc(Hons.), Batch 2017-2020, Mathematics Department, pursuing Masters in Actuarial Science from University College Dublin, Ireland recently engaged in an alumni interaction on the topic “Learning , Accomplishments and Future Endeavors”.
The session began with a brief introduction about the department by Dr. Advin Masih, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, MRU. He highlighted the vision and mission of the department. He elaborated the thrust area of research of the department, teaching strategy of the department, its mantra “Learning by Doing” and program highlights. Dr. Masih also showcased the student’s achievements of the department and invited the alumna for the talk.
Ms Baliyan started her talk by showing the presence and importance of higher education and its impact on personal and societal development. She also showed the importance of research work, programming, mathematical software’s and scientific writing in the curriculum, which helped her in getting admission in Masters’ program. She elaborated thoroughly the steps involved in getting admission in MS abroad. She also shared information about certain scholarships offered by different universities for masters’ program. She strongly recommended students to read books so that they built concepts and apply these concepts to certain problems.
Ms. Baliyan explained the process and number of papers one has to clear to become an actuary. She also highlighted the different job opportunities of an Actuarial Scientist. She advised the students to focus on their goals and constantly work smart to achieve that goal. At the end, session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Aparna Vyas, Associate Head, Department of Mathematics, MRU.
