FAQs

It is a good time to understand that Indian Life science space is open and dynamic. It encompasses vibrant biotech industry, innovation entrepreneurial ecosystem, increased industry academia interface, which is expected to make the Indian biotech industry a 100 billion dollar industry by 2025.

It is one of the fastest growing sectors in India and is expected to play key role in shaping India’s rapidly developing economy. On the other hand many initiatives and schemes have been floated by Government of India over the past 3 decades for building human resource capital and institutional capacity for the life science sector. The vision of the Government is to nurture home grown excellence. India currently holds 10th global publication rank and 18th global citation impact rank in science and technology.

Biotechnology has its roots in pre-historic times in the form of basic life sciences for e.g fermentation of fruit juices into wine, milk to cheese or yogurt, or that beer from malt and thus began the study of biotechnology. Today better integration within biology and closer collaboration with physical, computational and earth scientists, mathematicians and engineers can be used to find solutions to societal needs i.e.: sustainable food production, ecosystem restoration, optimized biofuels production and improvement in human health.

Biotechnology is multi-disciplinary in nature. Special methodologies are characteristics of this domain. Activities in this area have existed since several decades. In the recent past, this field has emerged as a major subject of study, particularly in graduate and post graduate programmes. Scope for students of Biotechnology for the coming years is immense. Incubation centers created by the government are also aiding towards potential production of human resource.

An information/admission package is provided to all potential applicants that communicate by email with our office. Feel free to communicate by email or by phone (0129-4198230) for any questions you may have, it will be our pleasure to help you.

For the interview, you may choose to brush up on your basic science fundamentals and about the field of Biotechnology. Prepare for the interpersonal interview as you would for a job interview.

Broadly jobs can be looked in both public and private sector. One can opt for higher studies, join national and international research institutes at varied positions such as scientist, research assistant, research associates, technical assistant or technical officer, pool officers etc., get into production and quality management divisions of food & pharmaceutical industry, drug & vaccine industry, diary etc. university and college teaching, Patent officer for specific and novel activities. Relevant specialised higher degree in IPR can lead to job opportunities and association with legal firms.

Be it manufacturing of and enhancing production of effective and safer drugs, diagnostic kits, affordable vaccines, neutraceuticals or designer foods, probiotics, biosensors, biochips, agro bio-chemicals, biofuels, industrial enzymes, transgenic crops aimed at obtaining food security, biosimilars etc or introduction of cleaner bioprocess to prevent pollution or bio remediate our spoilt natural resources or lead to use novel technologies as gene therapy or stem cell and regenerative medicine, all clearly spells the potential of biotechnology whose demand is increasing day by day in local as well as international platforms.

Collaborations in terms of sharing of knowledge and technologies amongst different nations are growing fast in this field and provide opportunities for global exposure. Bio-services is another sector requiring manpower with base in biotechnology.

The Key areas where research is undertaken are:

  • Medical Biotechnology
  • Plant Biotechnology
  • Environmental Biotechnology
  • Applied Microbiology
  • Bioinformatics

Yes. You can still apply for admission even if you are still working on your fourth year of studies. You must still submit an official transcript (with final grades from previous semester) as part of your application.Depending upon the success of your application, it is possible to gain ‘conditional’ admission to the program, the condition being successful completion of your 4-year/ 3years bachelor’s degree. Proof is required in the form of another official transcript that indicates your degree has been conferred.
